Thank you for writing to the USFWS before March 12, 2025. Every statement of support for monarchs is important.
Model letter to the USFWS:
Thank you for considering putting the monarch butterfly on the endangered species list. Here in the Northeast the decline is stark. Each year we have seen fewer monarchs, till the past few years, hardly any at all. That is quite a difference from years ago when so many graced the fields of milkweed and our gardens each summer.
It is obvious that climate change has played a part in their demise since some monarchs visit our gardens up until late October or early November, while they used to leave by the end of September. In areas where pesticides are used there are no butterflies or other pollinators in sight.
In our communities we have encouraged people to plant milkweed and native flowers. We have asked our highway maintenance crews to not cut milkweed and to adjust their mowing timetable.
The monarchs need all of our help, but it would be most helpful if they were designated as endangered since we are too close to losing them. We urge you to list the monarch butterfly as endangered so that actions may be taken to address the serious threats to their and our well being.
